5 ways to improve personal impact
Achieving and succeeding in the workplace, and in personal development depends on your ability to positively influence others. How you are seen and heard and how you make people feel is key to how others perceive you, how they react to you and what they expect from you.
And as a leader or manager your personal impact is how you are able to command authority, be taken seriously and influence others.
Here are 5 essential tips to maximise your personal impact in work
What impact do you want to make?
Think about the end goal. How do you want others to perceive you? What impact do you want to make, to your board, to your teams, customers or business partners? What is your brand – if you were a product what features would you highlight most.
Be authentic not a fake
Don’t try to be someone you’re not. You want to earn people’s trust because if they don’t believe who you are they won’t trust what you say or do. You don’t have to be outrageously outgoing and loud to get people’s attention, you’ll achieve maximum impact and presence when you are true to yourself. So always strive to be a real you and not a fake.
Manage how others perceive you
People form an impression of you whether you like it or not. So you may as well actively manage how others perceive you. This needn’t be as difficult as you might think. Being able to project confidence and conviction with more power, presence and authority are learnable skills.
Look, sound and act like a leader
To be taken seriously with your team, peers and managers you must look, sound and act like a leader – you won’t get very far if you don’t. You’ll not only get people’s attention, gain their trust but be able to get your message across in a powerful, believable and memorable way.
Speak with confidence and conviction
Being able to speak with confidence gives your voice a compelling and powerful quality. One that’s easier to listen to and will command a room. If you speak with hesitancy it could suggest that you are less certain of what you are saying and your own ability to deliver.
