People cannot perform an abstract competency. They can perform specific behaviours.

The problem with abstract capability language

Organisations often describe desired capability through broad words: confidence, presence, influence, resilience, inspiration, creativity or customer focus.

Those words are useful aspirations, but they are difficult to perform. A person cannot simply decide to be more influential without understanding what influence requires in a particular situation. A manager cannot coach greater presence unless both people can recognise the behaviours that create it.

The Performance Toolkits translate broad capability into choices people can see, practise and use.

A Performance Behaviour Library

Across more than twenty years of work, THE METHOD has developed a library of more than 200 observable performance behaviours.

Each behaviour answers a practical question: what specifically can this person think, say or do to create a stronger effect?

The behaviours are not rigid scripts. They are options. Their value comes from conscious selection and calibration according to purpose, audience and moment.

From competency to behaviour

Consider confidence. Confidence may be expressed through grounded posture, clear pace, decisive language, purposeful eye contact, tolerance of silence or the ability to respond without defensiveness.

Consider influence. Influence may require audience insight, relevant framing, useful questions, evidence, emotional connection, clear recommendation or intelligent response to resistance.

Once the capability becomes behavioural, it becomes teachable. Once it becomes observable, it becomes coachable. Once it becomes repeatable, it can become organisational.

The seven Toolkits

BE MY BEST SELF develops intention, self-awareness, emotional control and the ability to choose performance rather than default to habit.
BE MORE IMPACTFUL develops presence, clarity, authority and the ability to create an immediate effect that supports the objective.
BE MORE INSPIRING develops belief, meaning, energy and momentum in leadership, communication and change.
BE MORE PERSUASIVE develops audience insight, message calibration, influence, response to resistance and movement towards decision.
BE MORE RESILIENT develops steadiness, perspective, adaptability and constructive performance under pressure, challenge and uncertainty.
BE MORE CREATIVE develops curiosity, behavioural flexibility and the ability to generate useful alternatives when familiar approaches are insufficient.
BE A SALES & SERVICE EXPERT applies the system to commercial and customer interactions including discovery, value communication, objection handling, negotiation, service recovery and relationship growth.

Calibration, not mechanical application

Observable behaviours can be misused if they are treated as universal rules.

A behaviour that creates authority in one situation may create distance in another. Energy may inspire one audience and overwhelm another. Challenge may build credibility with an expert group and damage safety in a vulnerable conversation.

THE METHOD therefore connects every behaviour to Purpose, Persona and Performance. People learn not only the behaviour, but how to judge when, why and how strongly to use it.

Choose, combine or configure

A single Toolkit can address a focused performance need. Multiple Toolkits can be combined around a role, population or business priority. A bespoke Toolkit can be configured around specific Critical Performance Moments.

Bespoke does not mean inventing an entirely new methodology. It means selecting intelligently from a proven Behaviour Library, adapting the language and examples, and creating additional behaviours only where the organisation’s context demands them.

A shared language for performance

The Toolkits give participants, managers and coaches a common vocabulary.

Instead of saying, ‘be more confident’, a manager can identify the specific behaviour that would improve the effect. Instead of receiving vague feedback, the performer can rehearse a clear adjustment. Teams can agree what good looks like in their most important moments.

This reduces subjectivity and makes performance easier to transfer across people, teams and geographies.

THE PRACTICAL ASSET

Competency frameworks describe what the organisation values. The Performance Toolkits show people how to express those capabilities when performance becomes live.

They turn aspiration into behaviour—and behaviour into repeatable performance.
